Cloud Adoption Pressure Frustrating Developers

A global survey by Couchbase among 650 senior IT decision-makers examined the challenges faced by development teams during the race to the cloud and as they work to execute digital transformation initiatives.
The findings revealed that development teams are under pressure and under-supported. Among the top challenges are deadlines and agility requirements that were difficult to meet (42%), being asked to do too much in too little time (40%), or they did not have the skills (24%) or technology (23%) they needed.
“Organizations need to understand that when they are undertaking digital transformation, what they are actually doing is putting developers front and center,” said Ravi Mayuram, chief technology officer of Couchbase.
“The modern business depends on the developer and development agility more than ever. Development teams are not assisting the business; they are leading it to new frontiers through digital transformation,” he explained.
“That’s why they need to be given the right resources: be it cloud-based infrastructure, CI/CD friendly tooling and the right training. This is what will ensure success in these times of product-led transformation and growth,” Mayuram further added.
Couchbase’s research found that while development teams make extensive contributions to digital transformation and innovation initiatives, they are often frustrated by a lack of resources and communication with IT leaders. This is holding businesses back, preventing them from reaching their full potential and moving forward rapidly.
Without the right support, development teams aren’t able to drive digital transformation as quickly as the business may need them to: 34% of respondents said pressure from developers to support agile development and innovation was a driver for digital transformation projects, showing a direct impact on the speed at which an organization can move.
However, 19% of respondents said that their organization had been unable to pursue new digital transformation projects over the last 12 months because development teams were unable to meet the goals set for them.
Couchbase concludes that empowering developers is a critical competitive advantage because it helps enterprises meet the increasing expectations of their customers. IT leaders and developers share a similar goal: to build great applications. By increasing transparency and providing the right support and technologies, they can work together to make meaningful progress on digital transformation initiatives.
