As Australia's growing cloud industry continues to thrive under the demand for infrastructure, the region will require more high-performance, reliable data centers and services.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched its second AWS infrastructure Region in Australia — the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region. It is estimated to support more than 2,500 full-time jobs annually through a planned investment of more than USD4.5 billion (approx. AUD6.8 billion) in Australia by 2037.
With this new region, developers, startups, and entrepreneurs can run their applications in AWS data centers in Australia. Governments, education institutions and nonprofits also can use AWS to provide services to end users.
“Australia has a strong history of technical innovation, and the launch of a second AWS Region in Australia provides even greater resilience and enables more customers to develop cloud-based applications that help fuel economic development across the country,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of Infrastructure Services at AWS. "We are proud to deepen our investment by driving local job creation, building cloud skills, and creating opportunities for growth and collaboration with our local customers and AWS Partners."
The AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region is part of Amazon's ongoing expansion into Australia, including the launch of its first region in Sydney in 2012. It is expected to enable local businesses that want their data stored safely within Australia while providing consumers with faster response times for better, more efficient operations.
Victorian Minister for Trade and Investment Tim Pallas said regarding the new AWS region, “We know how important access to secure cloud infrastructure is to Victorian businesses, and providing more choice will deliver a boost to the economy, support innovation, and help to create new jobs locally.”
AWS also released an economic impact study estimating that the company’s investment will add approximately USD10.6 billion (approx. AUD15.9 billion) to Australia’s GDP by 2037. The facility will bring with it construction jobs, maintenance positions and several other employment opportunities for Australians.
With the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region launch, Amazon Web Services now has 99 Availability Zones across 31 geographic regions — with plans to add 12 more Availability Zones and four more AWS Regions in Canada, Israel, New Zealand, and Thailand.
The AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region consists of three Availability Zones and adds to the existing AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region. Each AWS Region comprises multiple Availability Zones, which are kept separate from each other and form distinct geographic locations. Customers who want to withstand additional failure points can build applications that run in multiple Availability Zones.
