Microsoft has announced that it is bringing the technology behind ChatGPT to its Bing search engine and Edge web browser.
And according to a person familiar with the plans in a CNBC report, Microsoft also plans to release technology to help big organizations launch their own chatbots using the ChatGPT technology from OpenAI.
According to this person, Microsoft wants to help its customers to launch new chatbots or refine their existing ones with the technology, which could be used to help craft suggested responses to call-center agents during customer service conversations.
While ChatGPT cannot respond to events that happened after 2021 due to the limited dataset it was trained on, Microsoft chatbots launched with Microsoft’s business ChatGPT service will contain up-to-date information.
Coming to a search engine
“There are 10 billion search queries a day, but we estimate half of them go unanswered. That’s because people are using search to do things it wasn’t originally designed to do. It’s great for finding a website, but for more complex questions or tasks too often it falls short,” wrote Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president and consumer chief marketing officer at Microsoft in a blog entry.
According to Mehdi, the new Bing will offer an improved version of the familiar search experience with more relevant results for simple queries such as sports scores and stock prices. A new sidebar with more comprehensive answers will also be returned for those who want them.
A new chat feature will also give users an interactive chat experience that lets them refine their search until they get the answer they are looking for by asking for more details, clarity, and ideas – complete with relevant links for immediate action.
“The new Bing can generate the content to help you. It can help you write an email, create a 5-day itinerary for a dream vacation to Hawaii, with links to book your travel and accommodations, prep for a job interview, or create a quiz for trivia night. The new Bing also cites all its sources, so you’re able to see links to the web content it references,” wrote Mehdi.
A limited preview of the enhanced Bing is gradually being rolled out worldwide on the desktop with a mobile preview promised soon. We were invited to join a waitlist when we attempted to access it. In the meantime, you can see examples of the new Bing in action from this Microsoft landing page here.
