The true backbone of successful software delivery lies not just in advanced technologies but in the people who design, develop, and deploy these solutions. A recent report offers insights into why and how.
The 2023 Accelerate State of DevOps Report by Google Cloud has unveiled compelling findings from its survey of over 36,000 professionals. One of the most significant revelations is that teams focusing on faster code reviews experience a 50% boost in software delivery performance. Moreover, those fostering generative cultures witness a 30% uptick in organizational performance.
However, technology alone isn't the magic bullet. "Improving all the technology, processes, and capabilities won't help enterprises succeed without a healthy culture that takes care of the talent behind the scenes of the delivery of quality software products," the report emphasizes.
Derek Holt, chief executive officer of Digital.ai and report sponsor, echoes this sentiment. "AI will continue to influence the industry by speeding up workflows for developers, enabling them to enhance overall performance. But this can only be achieved with proper security measures and guardrails. AI will only get teams so far without taking care of the people, culture, and processes that ensure the building and delivery of better and secure software," Holt states.
The report further highlighted that teams that center on users exhibit a 40% surge in organizational performance. This is complemented by the observation that higher levels of job security lead to a substantial 61% reduction in burnout. Additionally, high-quality documentation plays a pivotal role, contributing to a 25% rise in team performance. And not to be overlooked, flexible infrastructures have been seen to promote a 30% increase in organizational performance.
Artificial Intelligence, while a hot topic in tech circles, is still in its early stages regarding its impact on development teams. Although many are optimistic about the potential of AI-powered tools, widespread and coordinated usage in the industry is yet to be seen.
As organizations embark on digital journeys, the key takeaway remains clear: continuous improvement is essential. Regularly measuring outcomes, identifying areas for optimization, and making incremental changes can propel performance.
