The Asia-Pacific (APAC) manufacturing sector is teetering on the edge of a digital precipice.
While a staggering 87% prioritize digital transformation, a shocking 82% are grappling with the relentless pace of innovation, according to Zebra Technologies' 2024 Manufacturing Vision Study.
This paradox reveals a region bursting with ambition yet ensnared in a web of obstacles.
AI: The golden ticket or a Siren's Song?
AI is emerging as a potential savior, with 68% of APAC manufacturers pinning their growth hopes on it by 2029. This figure is even higher than the global average of 61%, underscoring the region's hunger for cutting-edge solutions.
But, the study highlights a fundamental question: Can AI genuinely deliver on its promises, or is it merely a mirage in the digital desert?
The study also exposes a glaring visibility gap: Only 25% of APAC leaders possess real-time oversight throughout their manufacturing process.
This lack of insight is a critical vulnerability, hindering efficiency, productivity, and quality. Despite acknowledging visibility as a top priority, 38% of leaders struggle to align IT and OT investments, further exacerbating the issue.
“Manufacturers often face challenges in effectively utilizing their data,” says Christanto Suryadarma, Zebra Technologies' sales vice president for Southeast Asia, South Korea and channel APJeC. “This is where AI and other digital technologies come into play to foster an agile and efficient manufacturing environment.”
In addition, APAC manufacturers are caught in a workforce dilemma: should they upskill existing labor or augment it with technology?
While 76% plan to reskill their workforce, 75% also intend to deploy mobility-enabling technology. This dual approach reflects a region grappling with the delicate balance between human expertise and technological prowess.
Meanwhile, pursuing quality is paramount, yet APAC manufacturers face challenges in real-time visibility, evolving regulations, data integration, and traceability.
While automation solutions like robotics and machine vision offer a glimmer of hope, the underlying issue of real-time visibility remains unresolved. So, can technology alone solve the quality conundrum, or is a more holistic approach needed?
The digital divide: A tale of two realities
Zebra's study paints a stark picture of the digital divide within APAC.
On one hand, there's a vibrant landscape of manufacturers eager to embrace AI and other digital tools. On the other hand, many businesses are struggling to keep pace with innovation, hampered by visibility gaps and workforce challenges, with many questions remaining unanswered.
So, can APAC bridge this divide, or will it become a permanent fixture of the region's manufacturing landscape?
The study clearly shows that APAC manufacturers are at a crossroads, with their future hanging in the balance. Their choices today will determine whether they emerge as leaders in the digital age or become casualties of their ambition. The stakes couldn't be higher.
