Modern Infra Just Got Real With Pure-Nutanix Alliance

The storage wars just shifted into hyperdrive.
While the industry keeps obsessing over GPUs and model parameters, Pure Storage and Nutanix created a partnership that could reshape how enterprises actually deploy modern workloads, including AI, at scale.
Dig further into this vendor handshake, and you will see a solution to the VMware migration anxiety currently being experienced by many customers, wrapped in a purpose-built modern virtualised infrastructure.
The VMware shift: Seizing the modern workloads opportunity
It’s clear that VMware's licensing changes are creating customer frustration. But what gets obscured is that it is also a massive architectural opportunity.
“This new deeply integrated joint offering combining the Nutanix platform and Pure Storage platform opens up a pathway for customers to shift towards a stack that is better designed to accelerate their infrastructure and application modernization journey,” explains Matthew Oostveen, chief technology officer for Asia Pacific and Japan at Pure Storage. The subtext? Traditional virtualization stacks weren't architected for the I/O patterns that define modern AI workloads.
The Pure-Nutanix combination potentially delivers 30-40% cost efficiency gains over VMware alternatives. But here's what the press releases didn't say: This is less about licensing arbitrage and more about addressing a storage architecture fundamentally misaligned with the needs of efficient virtualisation and AI architectures.
Beyond the hype: Navigating the migration landscape
The prospect of moving away from VMware can be appealing to many. Gartner predicts that “by 2028, cost concerns will drive 70% of enterprise-scale VMware customers to migrate 50% of their virtual workloads.”
However, the practicalities of migration present their challenges. Gartner reports that VMware migrations may be long, expensive and risky. The Pure-Nutanix partnership attempts to solve this through architectural simplification.

Oostveen is also pragmatic about the benefits of the partnership. The value proposition depends on native integration depth, reducing these migration penalties. “There is no revenue division — for Pure Storage, we will sell our storage while Nutanix will create a new separate AHV SKU to co-sell to deliver the Pure solution to customers,” Oostveen explains.
This go-to-market approach suggests both companies are betting on solution stickiness rather than one-time migration revenue.
The lock-in question: From VMware chains to partnered freedom?
Naturally, with any tightly integrated solution, questions of dependency arise. Critics argue that tight-coupling AHV with FlashArray via NVMe/TCP creates new dependency risks while solving VMware lock-in — the same types of risk that many were trying to avoid with the VMware exodus in the first place.
Oostveen pushes back: “This collaboration with Nutanix does not lock us into their platform and vice versa. Technology partners choose Pure Storage for the same reason customers choose us: operational efficiency, ease of updates, and simplicity of use and integration.”
He continues that the partnership creates integration depth without architectural imprisonment. Pure's single operating system approach means partners can tap into the entire storage portfolio without re-engineering their control planes.
In short, it's lock-in by choice, not by architecture.
Different pathways on the modern IT infra journey
Pure and Nutanix say their joint solution is all about customer choice. “Customers want agility and control of their mission-critical environments. The joint offering empowers customers to optimize and enhance their infrastructure and application strategy, positioning them to accelerate progress in their modernization journey,” said Oostveen.
Pure also says that besides the new integrated solution with Nutanix, the company offers other options for customers looking for VMware alternatives. Pure has also been working with Red Hat to help customers deploy and manage their virtual machines to containers. “Portworx for KubeVirt is the first software-defined storage, virtualisation-centric offering that provides a more cost-effective, low-risk approach for running VM workloads on Kubernetes using the Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Engine,” claimed Oostveen.
He adds that Pure also provides hybrid cloud options on AWS Outposts and Microsoft Azure VMware Solution (AVS) through its Cloud Block Store offering.
Architecting for modern workloads: Storage that understands the assignment
Beyond tackling VMware frustrations, the Nutanix-Pure partnership addresses a major realization among storage and AI teams: traditional storage views AI as just another application, and that’s wrong.
Any storage engineer will tell you that AI workloads exhibit wildly different I/O patterns: massive sequential reads during training, unpredictable random access during inference, and checkpoint writing that can saturate storage bandwidth in microseconds.
Pure Storage's FlashArray architecture, with its always-on inline deduplication and compression, is engineered for these needs. “Storage options for Nutanix come in two flavors: scale-out x86 server-based storage versus Pure’s purpose-built external flash storage platform. At scale, it’s harder and more costly to manage storage when it’s on the server itself. Pure’s dedicated external storage allows customers to do all of their policy-based management via a single management layer, and because it separates storage from compute, you can scale each independently,” Oostveen notes.
Essentially, the partnership introduces a new architectural philosophy. Purpose-built now means every component, from the NVMe/TCP fabric to the Purity operating system, optimizes for the data access patterns that make or break AI deployments.
Fortifying the frontier: The cyber resilience mandate
In an era of increasingly sophisticated threats, cyber resilience is paramount for modern IT infrastructure. The truth is that modern workloads, such as AI, expand attack surfaces exponentially. Every model endpoint, every data pipeline, and every inference API becomes a potential breach vector.
The Pure-Nutanix solution addresses the security challenge that AI poses through what Oostveen describes as a “data-centric strategy”: “At Pure Storage, data protection is built into the platform via ActiveDR, ActiveCluster, data-at-rest encryption, and SafeMode Snapshot capabilities.”
Combined with Nutanix Flow micro-segmentation, this creates a zero-trust storage architecture. Data moves through encrypted channels, every transaction leaves immutable audit trails, and SafeMode snapshots provide recovery points that can't be compromised by ransomware.
Future-ready: Predictive power for the coming wave of agentic AI
Looking ahead, the infrastructure must also adapt to new AI paradigms. The future is clearly heading toward RAG and Agentic AI.
This is where the Pure-Nutanix stack offers a future-proofing advantage. Oostveen calls it “predictive rebalancing”: “Pure Storage FlashArray uses a predictive rebalancing feature that automatically optimizes data placement across the array's storage drives to ensure performance, availability, and efficiency.”
This isn't marketing hype either. Agentic AI systems can generate unpredictable workload patterns as they autonomously shift between reasoning, retrieval, and action phases. Traditional storage is just not cut out for such levels of adaptation.

Ultimately, the Pure-Nutanix alliance is a recognition of the upcoming infrastructure convergence needed for AI workloads. Storage, compute, virtualization, and security merge into platforms optimized for specific workload patterns rather than general-purpose flexibility.
For storage engineers, this means rethinking architecture assumptions. Traditional metrics like IOPS and latency matter less than workload-specific optimizations like deduplication efficiency on model checkpoints and bandwidth allocation during parallel inference.
The question isn't whether this partnership will succeed. Rather, the more important question is whether traditional storage vendors can adapt their architectures fast enough to compete. AI workloads don't just need more storage; they need different storage.
Pure and Nutanix are betting that different wins over more. And with their partnership, they have given customers a viable alternative for a modern IT infrastructure.
