Singapore’s digital economy is one of the strongest and most advanced in Southeast Asia. In 2024, it contributed USD84.5 billion — or 17.7% of GDP — touching sizable aspects of daily life. From paying bills online to shopping on e-commerce platforms and using digital identity systems, seamless digital services have become second nature.
Yet this convenience rests on a foundation that is less visible but absolutely vital: the resilience of Singapore’s data centers. For years, the city-state has been a regional leader in hosting data centers, drawing global technology firms to its shores. However, expansion is becoming increasingly difficult due to scarce land, high operational costs, and the energy-intensive cooling required in a tropical climate — all of which have collectively restricted growth in this sector.
Meanwhile, businesses now depend on high-performance computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and data-driven platforms that are expected to be available around the clock. A single outage has the potential to ripple across supply chains, financial systems, and consumer services.
But growth is not the only concern. The next phase of competitiveness will not only be measured by the number of new data centers, but also by how efficiently, resiliently, and sustainably existing and new facilities are managed.
Data center operators now face stronger demands to lower carbon footprints and increase renewable energy use. A prime example is the world’s first Tropical DC standard, enabling safe operation at higher temperatures and humidity to save energy, building on earlier initiatives such as the Green Data Centre Standard (SS 564) and BCA-IMDA’s Green Mark for data centers.

These guidelines encourage providers to adopt measures that enhance the resilience and security of their services, aiming to minimise disruptions that could impact the economy and society.

Digital transformation can only succeed when it is built on stable, efficient, and scalable IT operations. Without this foundation, even the most forward-looking services risk faltering. Two of the biggest obstacles businesses face today are performance inefficiencies and mounting security threats.
