Equinix Joins Astra In New Jakarta Data Center

Global digital infrastructure and services provider Equinix has partnered with major Indonesian corporate Astra to develop JK1, a new data exchange in the capital Jakarta.

The two partners have established a joint venture for the project, with Equinix holding 75% and Astra the balance.

The move comes as the Indonesian government has launched an ambitious program for national digital transformation, targeting 30 million micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to go digital by 2024.

At the same time, Indonesia is building a new state-of-the-art smart city capital called Nusantara on the island of Kalimantan, with the first civil servants due to live there in 2024.

“The Indonesian government is strongly committed to accelerating digital transformation across the nation,” said Equinix president for Asia Pacific, Jeremy Deutsch.

“This joint venture with Astra taps into the rising potential of digitalization and illustrates Equinix’s ongoing commitment to serving the Indonesian community with capacity at scale to match computational, storage and edge requirements,”

The eight-story JK1 IBX data center is also set to open by the second half of 2024 and is expected to provide more than 1,600 cabinets and more than 5,300 square meters of colocation space when fully built.

Located in Jakarta's Central Business District and near major internet exchanges, JK1 will provide local and foreign businesses operating in Indonesia with the digital infrastructure and ecosystems required for optimal performance.

JK1 will incorporate the Equinix cooling array to support economic and environmental goals for organizations in Indonesia.

Equinix was the first company in the data center industry to set a 100% renewable energy target and commit to reaching climate neutrality by 2030.  

These goals are also in alignment with the Astra 2030 Sustainability Aspirations.
