CEOs are captivated by the promise of AI. They envision it revolutionizing their businesses, sparking groundbreaking innovations, and transforming how customers experience their brands. But a hidden obstacle threatens to derail these ambitions: their data.
A new report, “Data Strategies for AI Leaders,” from MIT Technology Review Insights and Snowflake, paints a worrying picture. A shockingly small 22% of business leaders feel prepared to embrace AI. This lack of readiness is a significant barrier to progress, hindering innovation and efficiency.
The culprit? Data in disarray. Think of a library overflowing with books in every language imaginable but with no organization, no catalog, and pages missing at random. This chaotic state of affairs mirrors the reality for many businesses. The report reveals that 78% of companies are held back from realizing AI's full potential due to these weak data foundations.
And it's not just about messy data. Scaling AI presents another hurdle, with 95% of organizations reporting difficulties in implementation. Data governance, security, and privacy concerns are paramount, cited by 59% of respondents. Close behind are worries about data quality, timeliness (53%), and the sheer cost of resources and investment (48%).
“A strong data foundation is at the core of generative AI capabilities, and business leaders need to move quickly to deal with concerns such as data security and cost and establish the foundation they need to deliver on the promise of AI,” says Baris Gultekin, head of AI at Snowflake.
Despite the challenges, there's a silver lining. Companies that have prioritized robust data foundations are already reaping the rewards of AI. They're extracting valuable insights from previously hidden sources, streamlining operations, and creating innovative new products and services. These data leaders demonstrate that AI can live up to its hype, but only when built on solid ground.
