Pure Storage Brings War On Silos To Storage Level (At Last)

Storage silos feel like playing Whac-a-mole. You whack one, and two more appear at the edges of your vision.
It’s not all the customer's fault. Vendors share the blame, too. While CIOs wrestle with data silos and compliance nightmares, storage vendors have quietly perpetuated the chaos by shipping isolated boxes that don't talk to each other.
Now, Pure Storage wants to remove data silos. And while that goal may sound familiar, the storage behemoth is unveiling what it calls the Enterprise Data Cloud (EDC) — a platform built ground up for virtualizing all of an organization's data into a single, policy-driven cloud.
EDC is an audacious pitch. But if customers buy into the vision, it could reshape how enterprises think about data infrastructure, especially as AI workloads demand unprecedented scale and agility.
The problem that has been siloed away
“This is what people think we do,” Matthew Oostveen, Pure Storage's chief technology officer for Asia Pacific & Japan, told CDOTrends during a briefing, pointing to a slide showing isolated storage boxes scattered across a data center.
“You have external storage that you plug into application stacks, and sure, it might be bigger and have big blinking lights and sit in the data center, but that's ostensibly how a CIO or a customer might view the world that we're in.”
The result is a cacophony of incompatible systems: Oracle databases running at 80% capacity while SAP environments sit at 15% utilization. The bigger problem is that they can't share resources because they don't speak the same protocols or operate under unified policies. And, so we end up with storage silos.
This architectural mess forced companies to push complex data management problems up the stack to software layers. The problem is that solving these data issues at the software layer may mean spending “enormous computational resources working around storage limitations,” said Oostveen.
Pure Storage argues we’ve gotten it all backwards: Eliminating storage silos problems should be done at the hardware level.
Unboxing the enterprise data cloud architecture
Pure Storage's answer to removing storage silos forever is the EDC, a platform built around three core components that fundamentally reimagine how data infrastructure works:
The unifying layer: At the heart of the EDC sits Pure Fusion, which the company calls a storage-as-code solution. Similar to Infrastructure as code (IaC), it virtualizes storage arrays into a single, manageable pool of resources. “Every array is an endpoint,” allowing administrators to manage the entire infrastructure from any system. The technology now includes Workload Automation with presets and remote provisioning for file, block, and object storage across the entire storage infrastructure. This eliminates the need for administrators to pre-plan and tune deployments, removing a major source of compliance risk and operational complexity.

Workflow orchestration: The platform delivers orchestrated workflows deployable across entire IT environments, built on thousands of existing connectors to third-party applications, including Cisco, Microsoft, VMware, ServiceNow, and Slack. Companies can deploy preset “recipes” or build custom workflows spanning storage, compute, network, database, and application configurations.
True OpEx consumption: Pure Storage has restructured its economic model to match public cloud consumption patterns. Unlike traditional lease agreements, Pure Storage's Evergreen//One offering provides genuine utility pricing where the company always owns the assets. This time, the company has lowered the minimum commitment to 750TB and reduced contract duration to 12 months, making the model accessible to mid-market organizations.
Security partnerships that actually matter
Two new security integrations demonstrate how the EDC breaks traditional storage boundaries by bringing some of the application-level capabilities closer to the storage layer:
Rubrik integration for cyber recovery: When Rubrik Security Cloud detects a threat, Pure Fusion automatically tags indelible SafeMode snapshots with Rubrik's ransomware scanning, pinpointing clean data for rapid restore. This integration delivers near-zero recovery time objectives (RTO) by combining Rubrik's threat detection with Pure Storage's high-performance restoration capabilities.
CrowdStrike LogScale partnership: Pure Storage and CrowdStrike have created the first validated, on-premises storage solution optimized for Falcon LogScale deployments. This combines Pure Storage's storage infrastructure with LogScale's log analytics for faster threat detection and investigation while maintaining on-premises control.
Hardware that matches AI ambition
The EDC vision is backed by significant hardware innovations that push the boundaries of what's possible in data center infrastructure:
FlashArray//XL R5, the high performer: The updated flagship block storage system delivers a monumental performance increase — 200% faster for OLTP database workloads. But more importantly, it now supports all three major protocols (block, file, and object) natively, enabling true workload consolidation that LLMs and advanced AI models prefer.
FlashArray//ST, the speed demon: Using storage-class memory and a lightweight version of Pure Storage's operating system Purity, the FlashArray//ST delivers over 10 million IOPS, which is more than double other systems in Pure Storage's range. “This is not for everybody,” Oostveen emphasizes. “This is a stripped-down, lightweight race car” designed for ultra-low latency applications like high-frequency trading in financial services.
The denser 300TB DirectFlash Modules: Perhaps most significantly, Pure Storage has developed 300TB DirectFlash Modules. That’s six times larger than competitive offerings currently. It also represents a 30-to-1 footprint reduction compared to spinning disk systems and a 20-to-1 power efficiency improvement. Part of the reason why Pure Storage can achieve this level of dense storage is because of its manufacturing capability. “We're the only storage company that actually manufactures its own drives,” Oostveen claims.
Designed for an AI future
For AI engineers and data architects, the EDC's implications extend far beyond traditional storage management. The platform addresses several critical challenges in AI infrastructure:
Power reallocation for GPU clusters: The dramatic power efficiency improvements — reducing storage power consumption from 25% of data center capacity to 1.7% — free up substantial power that can be diverted for GPUs. “The reallocation of that power towards the GPU stack is a big priority for customers at the moment,” Oostveen notes.
RAG optimization: The platform's unified file, block, and object support on single systems simplifies retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) deployments, which require rapid access to diverse data types. The FlashBlade//S updates provide 32% performance improvements specifically for AI training and inference workloads.
Data sovereignty for training: As AI models increasingly require sensitive training data that organizations won't send to public clouds, the EDC's on-premises capabilities with cloud-like economics become crucial. This is crucial for Asia Pacific as data sovereignty and data residency are becoming a major requirement and is also a reason why highly-regulated industries are being careful about machine learning. With these capabilities, medical imaging, financial services, and government AI applications can now maintain data sovereignty while accessing enterprise-grade infrastructure.
Solving AI workload repatriation headache: With EDC, Pure Storage is betting on a significant trend that many cloud-first organizations don't want to discuss: AI workload repatriation. Oostveen cites data suggesting that 40% of customers will move at least 20% of their AI workloads back on-premises over the next 24 months, driven by cost pressures, performance requirements, and AI architecture needs. “The data is starting to show that in 2025, cloud spending is very high, so there are cost pressures, there are complexity issues, and there's also a drive from artificial intelligence to bring workloads back on premises. That’s because architectures such as RAG run, from a performance perspective, better on premises,” he explains.
What all these mean for storage’s future
Based on the above claims, Pure Storage seems to demonstrate that EDC will deliver on its promises. “By abstracting the complexity of hybrid environments into a unified, policy-driven platform, Pure is enabling organisations to bring clarity and control to data management at scale. With automation, intelligence, and simplicity built in, Pure is delivering on the vision of an enterprise data cloud in a way that’s actionable today. It’s a bold, thoughtful approach — and one that sets a new bar for the industry,” wrote Matt Kimball, vice president and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, in a press release.
However, the more important question is whether enterprises are ready to abandon the familiar complexity of storage silos. With EDC, Pure Storage is confident they will.
