Digital Realty Wants You to Test Drive Your AI Cluster First

Your team spends months architecting an AI workload, procurement signs off on the hardware, and you commission a rack in a colocation facility. Then, somewhere between the GPU cluster and the hybrid cloud connection, reality bites. Latency is wrong. Cooling is inadequate. Digital Realty thinks it has the answer. The NYSE-listed operator, which runs 300-plus data center facilities across 50 metros on six continents, has launched the Digital Realty Innovation Lab (DRIL), a dedicated testing environment embedded inside its Northern Virginia campus where enterprises can validate AI and hybrid cloud workloads before committing to full-scale deployment. Think of it as a proving ground with a live network heartbeat.
“Innovation isn’t optional — it’s a competitive requirement in a world where data volumes and AI adoption are accelerating,” said Chris Sharp, Digital Realty’s chief technology officer.
For CDOs, Sharp’s words are not marketing fluff but an acknowledgment of a specific organizational pain. Enterprises are being pushed to ship AI faster than their infrastructure can keep pace. The DRIL aims to close an industry-wide gap: the lack of a risk-free space to test whether your architecture actually holds together before you bet production on it.
What’s actually in the lab
The headline spec is 150kW per cabinet, high-density enough to run serious GPU workloads, with liquid-cooling infrastructure from Lenovo Neptune and compute from AMD, Cisco, Supermicro, and others. That roster of partners shows that this is not a mock-up environment with dummy hardware. It is a live colocation data center slice populated with the same stack enterprises actually buy.
Cisco’s Kevin Wollenweber, senior vice president and general manager of Data Center and Internet Infrastructure, made the CDO-relevant point: “AI investment requires complete confidence. The infrastructure supporting AI workloads is too critical to blindly trust without testing.” That confidence gap is exactly what digital leaders are navigating right now.
The DRIL’s answer is full-stack Cisco AI Pods available for testing across edge, RAG, training, and large-scale inferencing scenarios. It allows CDOs to stress-test the networking, compute, and security demands of their specific use case before a purchase order is signed.
The connectivity layer also deserves attention. The DRIL plugs directly into ServiceFabric®, Digital Realty’s global interconnection platform. It means enterprises can validate their hybrid cloud architecture, such as latency profiles, cloud on-ramps, and multi-site performance, in conditions that mirror production.
Vcinity chief executive officer Harry Carr noted that the lab helps enterprises “accelerate not only the speed of AI deployment, but also the time to value.” For a CDO under board-level pressure to deliver AI ROI timelines, reducing the gap between proof-of-concept and monetizable production is the whole game.
Why it matters to data leaders
Three things make this more than a vendor showroom. First, the DRIL sits in a live data center, not a replica. Customers can bring their own workloads or co-develop representative architectures with Digital Realty’s team, which means the performance data they collect is real, not simulated. Second, the ePlus AI Experience Center baked into the lab addresses the power and cooling variables that are increasingly the hidden constraint in enterprise AI planning — a CDO who discovers GPU thermal limits in the lab rather than in production has avoided an expensive and embarrassing retrofit. Third, Digital Realty is already planning a London expansion in early 2026, signaling that this capability will eventually be accessible globally rather than requiring a trip to Virginia.
ePlus president Ken Farber described the combined offering as providing customers “the guidance, scale, and connectivity they need to transform ideas into real-world AI solutions.” It also acknowledges that the enterprise AI stack is complex enough that independent validation infrastructure is now a category of its own, and Digital Realty is staking out that territory.
The DRIL does not guarantee a flawless deployment, but it shifts the moment of truth from a high-stakes production cutover to a contained, reversible testing cycle. In an environment where AI project failure rates remain stubbornly high, that is a proposition worth taking seriously — even if the lab’s Northern Virginia postcode means your first test drive will involve a transatlantic flight.
