AI Killed the Networking Star

In 1979, we were told “Video Killed the Radio Star.” It was a catchy epitaph for an era where the medium shifted, and those who couldn’t adapt were left in the dust. Fast forward to 2026, and we’re witnessing a similar, albeit more expensive, execution: AI just killed the legacy WAN.
The old wide-area network — a clunky, hardware-centric patchwork of MPLS circuits and “set-and-forget” policies — simply cannot handle the jitter-sensitive gravity of distributed intelligence. According to a new report (paywall) from the Dell’Oro Group, the industry is responding by pouring USD21 billion into Distributed Cloud Networking (DCN). This is no hardware refresh but a total reimagining of the internet’s central nervous system for the “Work from Anywhere” and “Compute Everywhere” age.
The USD21B nervous system
The numbers are aggressive. Dell’Oro projects DCN revenue will surge at a 30% CAGR through 2029. Why the sudden fascination? Because as AI moves from centralized labs to the messy reality of the “application edge,” the “operational penalty” of fragmented control planes has become a death sentence.
“DCN buyers are moving beyond isolated upgrades and are prioritizing architectures that reduce operational seams,” says Mauricio Sanchez, senior director at Dell’Oro Group. Interpretation: we are finally cauterizing the wounds left by the “Frankenstein’s Monster” approach to networking. We’re shifting toward a “single thread” in which connectivity, security, and telemetry aren’t separate departments but are the same line of code.
From "dumb pipes" to DevOps
The DCN revolution is fueled by a “trifecta” of transformations: cloud microservices, latency-sensitive edge apps, and a nomadic workforce. This is a shift from Capex-heavy hardware to Opex-driven software that values “constant reconfiguration” over static setups.
The report highlights three critical pillars:
- The application edge: The fastest-growing sector. Enterprises are pushing “application-aware steering” directly against workloads. If your LLM’s inference engine is at the edge, you can’t afford a round-trip to a distant data center.
- The middle-mile power move: Performance now depends on “cloud adjacency.” If you don’t own the middle-mile interconnect, you don’t own the AI outcome.
- The user/WAN Edge: SD-WAN and SASE are converging. Policy is now “portable,” following users like a digital shadow from the home office to the cloud.
Why should we care
If you’re an engineer, the “dumb pipe” is dead. DCN is fostering a “collaborative mindset” between networking and DevOps teams that was previously impossible. Sanchez notes that “application-adjacent controls are now influencing WAN decisions that used to be driven primarily by transport.” It means the network is no longer a utility you hide in the basement. In the AI era, the network is the application. If your connectivity isn’t as “coherent” as Dell’Oro suggests, your expensive AI models will be nothing more than high-tech statues — beautiful, but going nowhere fast.
