While sustainability remains an abstract topic for many companies, employees are increasingly prioritizing sustainability in the office, according to a new survey.
Adobe revealed in its recent survey of more than 1,000 Hong Kongers that 80% of Hong Kong executives believe in the importance of sustainability at work.
The Adobe Sustainability at Work study aimed to understand employees and executives’ stance on environmental impact, asking respondents about personal and professional sustainability initiatives and their forecasts for 2030.
The study found that the top common sustainability practices implemented by companies in Hong Kong included reducing or eliminating paper usage (46%), using digital document storage and management (43%), and curbing electricity consumption (37%). Additionally, over a quarter (27%) of Hong Kongers believed their company was lagging behind in their sector when it came to implementing sustainability practices.
The survey results further indicated that Hong Kong employees were strongly committed to creating a sustainable workplace. Six in ten respondents (62%) said they would like to be more involved in driving sustainability practices at their workplace; over a third believed that it was the responsibility of everyone working in their organization to help drive sustainability practices.
“As ESG rises up the agenda in the city, sustainability has become one of the metrics for business success. Hong Kong companies are increasingly seeking innovative ways to meet the sustainability targets,” said Tony Ng, managing director of Greater China, Adobe.
According to Hong Kong business leaders, sustainability (47%), customer loyalty and retention (50%), and sales revenue (46%) were crucial metrics for determining the success of their companies.
As for Hong Kong employees, nearly half the workforce in Hong Kong (41%) would only work at a company that prioritized sustainability. They also saw many other benefits of sustainability at work including less harm to the environment (54%), lower costs (49%), and would boost productivity rates (37%). 35% thought it would improve workplace culture.
Fast forward to 2030, Hong Kong respondents believed their companies should consider the entire supply chain, including vendors, when implementing sustainability initiatives (72%), focus their sustainability initiatives primarily on harm reduction (71%) and revamp internal processes to reduce their in-office/workspace environmental impact (68%).
Ng further added, “Beyond shaping corporate reputation, effective sustainability practices, more importantly, help to improve the relationship between a company and different stakeholders, including employees and consumers."
“In the digital-first era, we look forward to seeing more Hong Kong companies recognize the power of digital technology and leverage resource-free workflows across our solutions to operate more efficiently in a digital world and create a more sustainable future," Ng concluded.
